w/b Wednesday 5th January

Welcome back! This is a short week to kickstart the new term as we have an Inset Day for teacher training on Tuesday.

Literacy: This week, we will be recounting what we did in our Christmas break. Our focus for literacy this half term is diary writing so why not start by writing a recount in the first person and in the past tense. We will then be introduced to our text for the next few weeks, 'Diary of a Killer Cat' by Anne Fines. This text is written as a diary and gives the perfect model to us for how to write diaries. We will be exploring the characters feelings, point of view and discovering the features of a diary.

Reading: This half term, we will be using some of our reading time to engage in 'whole class reading' using the text, 'Oliver Twist' written by Charles Dickens. This was written in the Victorian times and is based on the story of a young boy who was raised in a workhouse. During these whole class reading times, we will be reading the text together and exploring the key themes. The children will be encouraged to read aloud to a partner or part of a small group. We will focus on using expression and gaining fluency.

Maths: This week, we are continuing with our unit on Multiplication and Division. We will recap the 3, 4 and 8 times tables before moving on to learn how to multiply and divide by 2 digit numbers.

PE: This half term, we will be doing hockey on Monday afternoons and gymnastics on Thursday afternoons in the hall. Please do remember to come to school in your PE kits, unless otherwise notified on the class dojo.

Science: We will be learning about famous inventors and engineers this half term. Each week we will discover a new inventor and look at which invention they are most famous for. We will consider what life was like before this invention and how it has changed our lives today. This week we will be finding out about the life and work of Marie Curie. She is most famous for inventing the x-ray machine and the use of radiation in medicine. We have a lot to be thankful to her for!
