Here we are at the start of week 5. This week sees our Harvest Service at the church; the first time we have been allowed to gather as a school in the church since before the pandemic. We are all very much looking forward to singing our Harvest songs and hearing more about the meaning of Harvest from Father David. Please note, the children will NOT need to wear their PE kits to school on Monday as we will be going to the church at 2pm instead of doing our usual football PE lesson.
Topic: We are finding out more about what the Greeks were known for this week, as well as learning more about the gods and goddesses. We will be looking carefully at many sources and asking questions about what we can learn from these sources. With the recent Olympic games in mind, we will be finding out more about the Olympian gods and designing our own gods.
Literacy: We are reading extracts of Greek myths this week and focussing on speech. We will be changing texts from the 3rd person to the 1st person. We will imagine we are in the myths and re-write parts of myths from our perspectives. From here we will add speech to our myths using speech bubbles and moving onto using speech marks.
Maths: Continuing with addition and subtraction this week, we will be crossing the tens when adding and subtracting 2 and 1 digit numbers from 3 digit numbers. Working in smaller groups this week, we will use a range of equipment to secure our understanding before moving onto the next small step.
Spellings: This week, I would like the children to focus on their Common Exception Words from the back of their books. I will be asking them to choose the next 8 - 10 words that they need to practise. I will oversee the writing up of these lists and then we will practise these throughout the week. Please support your children with this at home this week and hopefully we can get more words ticked off!
Art: We have started a Greek column picture last week so we will be finishing these this week. I will be sure to take lots of photos to add to the dojo for you all to see.
PE: In gymnastics this week we will be getting out the equipment and using it in different ways to support our sequences that we have worked hard to master this half term so far. How could we travel along a bench? How can we use a hoop when performing a leap or a balance?
Science: This week is all about mighty muscles! Now we know about our skeletons, we will be finding out about our muscles and how they help us to move. What exercises can we do to help strengthen our muscles?
Reading: Keep an eye out in your child's bookbag this week as I will be sending home a booklet for how you can support your child with their reading, and spellings, at home. This was in light of our class meeting from last week after a few parent questions regarding reading. It is essential that all parents are able to support their child, just for a few minutes every day, with their reading and spellings at home. Please use the suggestions on the sheet to help you with this.
The children and I have been talking about a Greek Day, possibly to take place after half term so we have more time to organise it. I will send home more details nearer the time but do start thinking about your child's fancy dress outfit. It could be a traditional Ancient Greek outfit using an old bedsheet and a crown made of leaves, or perhaps your child has been inspired by our work on the Spartan army and would like to dress up as a warrior? Or maybe a Greek god or goddess?
A message will be going out this week about when parent consultation meetings will take place so keep an eye out for this, if I am not already meeting with you this Tuesday or Wednesday.
Have a great week everyone!
